Cowan's Superb Diamond Debut

Hercules Wimbledon Athletic Club’s Dwayne Cowan followed up his IAAF World Athletics Championships bronze medal-winning 4x400m relay performance in London with a superb victory in the international-studded 400m race at the prestigious Diamond League Grand Prix meeting in Birmingham on Sunday, writes Tom Pollak.


It was the first time Cowan, 32, had competed in the Diamond League but he timed his effort to perfection not only winning the race but also posting a lifetime best of 45.34 seconds, slicing two-hundredths of a second off his previous best time. Running in lane six, Cowan came into the final straight several metres down on his rivals but, he seemed to switch into another gear as he edged past them in the final 100 metres to beat American Vernon Norwood, who has clocked 44.4, by more than a metre.
