Hercules Wimbledon Athletic Club’s top one-lap runner Dwayne Cowan produced the best form of his life at the Diamond League meeting at the Olympic Stadium in Stratford on Sunday to clinch a place in Britain’s team for the IAAF World Athletics Championships which are being staged at the same venue next month, writes Tom Pollak.
Despite drawing the difficult outside lane in the 400 metres, Cowan used all his experience to run a sensible race. He kept something in store over the first 300 metres and, as his British rivals gathered to pick him off as they drew level entering the home straight, he stepped up a gear to finish third behind two USA runners but, more crucially, was the top British finisher in a lifetime best time of 45.36 seconds. His time took one-tenth of a second off his previous best set when winning the European team championship 400m in Lille, France, a fortnight earlier and lifts him to second in this year’s British rankings.
